Replacing a legacy system and expanding operational assurance across a high-pressure gas transmission operation
The challenge
Wood's operation of the Central Area Transmission System (CATS) — one of the UK North Sea's principal gas transmission pipelines and processing terminals — demands exceptional rigour across every dimension of operational safety and integrity. Although CATS had previously operated a digital permit to work system, it had grown increasingly difficult to maintain and lacked the flexibility to support evolving operational requirements. Beyond PTW, managing shift handovers, process safety overrides, and pipework joint integrity across a complex, high-pressure gas handling environment relied on a mix of manual processes and disconnected tools, limiting real-time visibility and creating gaps in the audit record.
The solution
Elisian was selected to replace the legacy PTW system and broaden the operational assurance capability across CATS in a single deployment. Permit to Work, Handovers & Events, Process Safety Overrides, and Joint Integrity Management were all configured within the Elisian platform, tailored to the specific operational and regulatory requirements of a high-pressure gas transmission environment. The breadth of the deployment meant Wood could consolidate multiple previously separate processes onto one supported, auditable platform.
The outcome
Wood achieved a step change in operational visibility and control across the CATS system. Shift teams hand over with confidence on a structured digital record, safety overrides and permit activity are fully tracked and auditable in real time, and joint integrity data is managed consistently within the same platform. The consolidated deployment significantly reduced the administrative burden on operations teams and provided the evidence base needed to satisfy the HSE and asset owners across all relevant workstreams.
